WHAT IS YOGA?

What is Yoga?

The word yoga comes from the Sanskrit word “yug”, which means to yolk, unite or bind. Yoga means: ‘That which unites you to reality.’

There is a misconception, especially in the West, that Yoga is flexing your body and moving into pretzel-like postures on a mat. This ‘exercise’ part of Yoga is called Asana. It is only one eighth of the full quota of what Yoga is actually about.

Yoga is not physical exercise! Read these blogs to dive into the TRUTH of what yoga REALLY is!!!

When practicing Yoga on the mat, we focus on a handful of components. These are to experience wonderful benefits beyond just flexibility.

We focus on:

  1. Physical movement / poses known as Asanas or Kriyas.
  2. Pranayama – also known as breathwork.
  3. Deep concentration, which leads to meditation.
  4. Removing of the distraction and attachment to our senses.
  5.  Being present to what is
  6. Being open to experience
  7. Creating intention
  8. Observation
