Cleansing Practice
Yoga was originally designed to be a system, that when followed, would take you out of all your misery, your old patterns, your ill-health, and raise you into a high vibrational being, full of vitality, having enlightenment (Samadhi) and reaching states of bliss (Ananda).
This was not to be achieved by only sitting on a mat, but was a complete lifestyle system.
One of the parts of the system is called: Saucha – directly translated as ‘purification’.
It is a component of one of the limbs of Yoga practiced to purify all 10 bodies and our environment. There is no point in eating healthy, going for Gong sound baths, writing in a gratitude journal and moving our body on a mat if our internal systems are not functioning optimally and we are in a toxic environment.
By practicing Saucha we cleanse the body, mind and environment so that all our efforts will increase in effectiveness.
With a purified body and mind we are able to hold the higher frequencies in our system for longer.
Yoga has a handful of cleansing techniques called Cleansing Kriyas.
Cleanse Your Body
Here is a list of cleansing technique you can take on to purify your body and raise your frequency:
1. Start your day with a cold shower.
2.a. Dry body massage. This is where you massage your body using an all natural brush or scrub like sea sponge, cactus, palm, hemp or sisal. You massage your body without water, cream or oil… hence a dry body massage. Dry body massage before you take a cold shower. (Note: if you have dry skin, only dry body brush 1 x a week).
2.b. Or massage your body with oil like almond / coconut oil. You can do this before you take your cold morning shower. This increases circulation. The oil helps ‘pull’ toxins out of the tissues.
3. Brush your teeth with a fluoride free toothpaste. (or make your own with 1 part salt and 2 parts potassium alum).
4. Brush your tongue (when you brush your teeth) and brush to the back of your tongue so that you gag and make your eyes water. This helps with coughing up toxic mucus from the throat and cleansing the eyes because of the tears that are produced.
5. Neti Pot. A Neti pot is a water pot that looks like Aladdin’s lamp. It is used to cleanse the nasal passages, sinuses and back of the throat. To make the formula: add sea / Himalayan / pink salt to purified / bottled water. The nozzle of the pot is inserted into the opening of one nostril. By tilting the head to the side the water eventually runs out of the opposite nostril. Depending on angles, whether you hold the breath or gently inhale through the nose, will all determine where the water goes.
6. Enema. A weekly water enema aids the colon. It flushes out waste and toxins to get the system to work faster. Because the colon will be clear for a period of time healing and repair of the lining of the colon can occur. A lot of people have porous lining of the colon from all the sugar and gluten they consume. Definitely do an enema if you have been constipated for a while. You can buy a self- enema kit at the pharmacies, so you can do it on your own.
7. Oil pulling using coconut or sesame oil. This removes bacteria from the mouth, reduces inflammation, reduces bad breath and improves dental health.
8. Drinking plenty of water.
9. Fasting. This can be 1 day a week or intermittent fasting (where you don’t eat anything for 12 – 16 hours in a day). When fasting drink plenty of water. Use the time to rest.
10. Move your body every day in some way.
11. Use spices in cooking or as a tea; especially black pepper, ginger, cinnamon, cardamon, cumin and turmeric.
12. Start your day with a glass of water with lime / lemon juice in it. This is very cleansing and helps the absorption of nutrients.
Cleanse Your Environment
1. Wear fresh clean clothing after your morning cold shower
2. Wear natural fibre clothes
3. Wear light coloured clothing
4. Make sure your home and work space is de-cluttered
5. Rooms should be well ventilated with lots of natural light
6. Your home should be clean
7. Reduce your time spent on electronic devices and watching TV
8. Sleep in a well ventilated, dark, quiet, cool room
9. Sleep on a firm mattress
10. Position your bed East to West with the head at the east point. This cuts across the earth’s north-south magnetic field. If you lie North-South you will wake tired and grumpy.
11. Reduce your exposure to pollution and toxins like sound, tech, microwaves, car emissions, toxins in food, toxic people, etc.
Cleanse your Mind
1. Meditate every day
2. Work on clearing your old limited patterns. This can be achieved through a daily practice of breathing, positive affirmations, meditation, visualisation or Kundalini Yoga.
3. Breathing practice every day
4. Chant every day
5. Work on strengthening your Neutral Mind

Other Useful Yogic tips:
1. Practice a breathing technique like Ego Eradicator or Alternate Nostril Breathing every morning.
2. Don’t cut your hair. Uncut hair maintains the body’s electromagnetic field and helps the body gather phosphorous and vitamin D from the sun. It takes energy and minerals to re-grow hair.
3. Don’t have bangs / fringe over the forehead. This impedes the transmission of light to the pineal gland through the porous bones of the forehead. Which then disrupts your natural circadian rhythms as well as dampens your intuition.
4. Do a daily Yoga / Qi Gong / Thai Chi practice.
